The Astros patience with Brett Wallace’s slow start came to an end Thursday.
Houston optioned the first baseman, who was hitting .042 in 24 at bats and struck out 17 times already this year, to Oklahoma City.
To replace Wallace on the roster, the Astros called up Brandon Laird. Laird was hitting .353 in Oklahoma City with a pair of home runs and 14 RBIs. Laird also hit .328 through spring training.
To make room on the 40 man roster for Laird, the Astros designated left handed reliever Xavier Cedeno for assignment. Cedeno had an 11.37 ERA in five appearances for the Astros this year.
