The Astros have officially signed right-handed reliever Jose Veras to a one-year deal.
The 32-year-old went 5-4 in 72 appearances in 2012 with a 3.63 ERA to go along with 79 strikeouts and 61 hits allowed. His 10.61 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 10th among NL righty relievers.
Veras will fill the role of Wilton Lopez, who the team traded earlier this offseason. A corresponding roster move will be announced at a later date.
Veras' 151 appearances in the past two seasons tie him for second among pitchers in that span. In his last three seasons, he has a 3.73 ERA with 212 strikeouts and 147 hits allowed.
Infielder Brandon Laird and outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin have both cleared waivers and have been outrighted to Triple A Oklahoma City. The Astros have 40 on their 40-man roster after the moves.
