The Houston Astros have announced their Minor League Pitchers and Players of the Month for July.
Triple A Oklahoma City RedHawks
Pitcher of the Month – LHP Kevin Chapman: In 12 games, the left-hander went1-0 with six saves, 20 strikeouts, four walks and a 2.53 ERA. In his 40 games at Triple A this season, Chapman has 62 strikeouts and a 1.31 ERA while notching the best strikeouts per 9.0 innings ratio (13.50) in the entire Pacific Coast League.
Player of the Month – C Carlos Perez: In his 21 games in July, the 23-year-old hit .338 with three doubles, one home run and a .420 on-base percentage. He’s also thrown out 32.2% (19-for-59) of all baserunners attempting to steal this season. That’s good for seventh in the PCL.
Double A Corpus Christi Hooks
Pitcher of the Month – RHP Tyson Perez: He went 1-0 as he recorded five saves, seven strikeouts and just two walks in his 10.2 innings. Perez was chosen by the Astros in the 17th round of the 2011 draft, and has gone 3-0 with a 2.54 ERA and eight saves with the Hooks this season.
Player of the Month – IF Telvin Nash: In 20 games, he hit .328 with 10 homers, 20 RBI and a 1.247 OPS (.434 OBP/.813 SLG). A third-round pick in 2009, he led all Double A players in OPS and slugging in July, and tied for first in homers. His 18 total home runs this season are the most in the Texas League.
Class A Lancaster JetHawks
Pitcher of the Month – LHP Josh Hader: This is Hader’s second Pitcher of the Month award. In July, he went 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 29 strikeouts in five games. The 20-year-old lefty is 9-2 and leads the California League in ERA (2.70) and WHIP (1.10) while ranking third in strikeouts (112).
Player of the Month – IF Rio Ruiz: In 26 games, he hit .333 with 12 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 21 RBI and a 1.005 OPS (.424 OBP/.581 SLG). In 108 games with Lancaster this season, Ruiz has hit .303 with 30 doubles, 11 homers, 71 RBI with a .394 on-base percentage.
Class A Quad Cities River Bandits
Pitcher of the Month – LHP Albert Minnis: Went 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 15 strikeouts in six outings during the month.
Player of the Month – IF Chase McDonald: Hit.362 with nine doubles, six homers, 19 RBI and a 1.083 OPS (.434 OBP/.649 SLG) in 26 games in July.
Class A Short Season Tri-City
Pitcher of the Month – RHP Troy Scribner: Posted a 5-0 record with a 0.79 ERA and 40 strikeouts in six July starts. He was recently promoted to Quad Cities and has gone 9-1 with a 1.53 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 13 total outings between Tri-City (10g) and Double A Corpus Christi (3g).
Player of the Month – IF Nick Tanielu: The 21-year-old hit .344 with seven doubles, one triple, two homers, 29 RBI and a .380 on-base percentage in his 23 games in July. He was selected by the Astros in the 14th round of this year’s draft.
Rookie Level Greeneville
Pitcher of the Month – RHP Angel Heredia: He allowed just one earned run in 18.0 innings while posting a 0.50 ERA with 22 strikeouts. Heredia has posted a 1.75 ERA this season with the Astros and as not allowed a run in his last 13.1 innings pitched. He is a product of the Astros Dominican Academy.
Player of the Month – OF Jason Martin: Hit .293 with seven doubles, four triples, nine RBI and a .403 on-base percentage. Martin, whom the Astros selected in the eighth round of the 2013 draft, had a 16-game hitting streak from July 3-21.
Pitcher of the Month – RHP Elieser Hernandez: The 19-year-old went 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 26 strikeouts during the month.
Player of the Month – OF Alexander Melendez: Hit .385 with a .903 OPS in 23 games.
Dominican Summer League – Blue Club
Pitcher of the Month – LHP Salvador Montano: In 23 innings pitched, he went2-1 with a 2.35 ERA with 28 punch outs.
Player of the Month –OF Rodrigo Ayarza: Hit.287 with eight doubles, one home run and 17 RBIs.
Dominican Summer League – Orange Club
Pitcher of the Month – RHP Juan Hernandez: Went 1-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.
Player of the Month – IF Frankeny Fernandez: Hit.322 with seven doubles, three triples, one homer and 18 RBIs along with 15 stolen bases. Both players were recently promoted to the Gulf Coast League Astros after their strong seasons in the DSL.
