Some general managers like to hide behind the curtain, in their offices.

Not Jeff Luhnow.

The Astros’ general manager was happy to greet some fans during FanFest at Minute Maid Park on Saturday. He even talked baseball with a few of them.

“I think it’s great to interact directly with the fans,” Luhnow said on Saturday. “I think last year I was a little overwhelmed because I didn’t know anybody. But I’ll tell you what, at the season ticket holders’ event I think about ¾ of the people I had seen before and talked to. I feel like they’re a part of the community.”

But Luhnow’s interactivity doesn’t end with face-to-face conversations, the 46-year-old executive has a Twitter account with over 20,000 followers, more than Justin Maxwell, Bud Norris and Lucas Harrell combined.

“I think (interacting with fans is) great,” he said. “I love interacting with the kids and also the adults are kids at hear when they want to talk about their team. They want to give you some feedback, which is great to hear.”

But is the feedback about the team really great? After all, the Astros won just 55 games last season and have had two back-to-back 100-loss seasons.

So, what has that feedback been like?

“Optimistic. They’re optimistic,” Luhnow said. “I think everybody is realistic about the situation we’re in but they’re appreciative and they understand the plan and they’re optimistic because they see the players and how talented they are and it’s just a matter of putting together.”
