While the Rockets have tipped off their 2013-14 season with championship hopes on their minds, their minor league team will try to defend its NBA Development League title when it begins its season Nov. 23.

To help them try to accomplish that feat, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers added eight players in Friday’s NBA D-League draft, including James Johnson with the second pick in the first round and Dario Hunt with the 16th pick.

Johnson, a 6’9, 245 pound forward, played for Wake Forest from 2007-09 where he averaged 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls 16th overall in 2009 and has also played for the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings.

Hunt is a 6’8, 230 pound power forward out of the University of Nevada. He was a four-year starter who played for the Demon Deacons from 2008-12 and averaged 10.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during his senior season. During the 2012-13 season, Hunt played overseas with BC Odessa and OkoStadt Gussing Knights.
