Canaan: Four college years helped development
The Rockets selected Murray State's Isaiah Canaan with the 34th overall pick in Thursday's NBA Draft.
Canaan is a four-year college player who averaged 21.8 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in his senior season. His efforts earned him Honorable Mention All-America honors from the Associated Press.
"We feel that we got an accomplished point guard that has a lot of experience: a playmaker, also a great shooter, and a solid defender," said Arturas Karnisovas, the Rockets' Director of Scouting. "He comes from a program with great defensive fundamentals, so we thought we got a great pick today."
For most in Red Nation, the bigger story from this day may have been a move that wasn't made. For all the pre-draft rumblings about a trade involving Thomas Robinson, the Rockets had not made a trade by the end of the first round.
"We had a bunch of opportunities,' Karnisovas said. "As always, we had a bunch of calls, but it came out that we stayed with our 34th pick and we're really happy with what we got at 34."
