NBA China and Yao Ming have announced a NBA Yao school will be established in China.
The school will help develop youth basketball with Yao as the face leading the effort.
“It has always been my dream to positively impact the lives of youth through sports participation,” Yao said in a press release. “Basketball fans in China are passionate and eager to participate in high-standard basketball training programs. I look forward to working with the NBA to establish the NBA Yao School as a trusted destination for basketball training. I am also excited to extend our partnership with the NBA and demonstrate our joint commitment to youth development.”
Yao came to Houston as the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, where he went on to play from 2002 to 2011. In those years, he was an eight-time NBA All Star before injuries shortened his career.
The first program of the NBA Yao School will launch at the Wukesong Basketball Park in February 2014. More information can be found at www.nbayaoschool.com.
