The Astros are in dire need of a win after six consecutive losses, but they’d also like to not play an extra-inning game after the last two games have gone 13 and 11 innings. The Astros send out left-hander Brett Oberholtzer to try to end the skid against the Cleveland Indians, who are only a half-game back in the American League wild-card standings. Cleveland holds the head-to-head edge over Baltimore, Kansas City, Oakland and Texas. Cleveland’s record against teams currently below .500 is 47-18 (.723), the best record against teams with a losing record in the majors.

Marc Krauss, whose three hits were one-third of the team’s total in Thursday’s 2-1 loss to the Indians, is batting third on Friday. J.D. Martinez will be the starting designated hitter, batting seventh. Martinez is making his first start since going on the disabled list on July 26 with a sprained left wrist. Brandon Laird gets the start at third base. As a member of the A’s, Chris Carter was 3-for-5 with a home run all-time against Cleveland starter Zach McAllister.
